Nothing wrong with being conservatives and open minded to social matters. Being a conservative doesn't mean you are a racist or somehow backwards in our thoughts about life and enjoyment. Got to get over names the national media likes to brand people with and accept people as they are not how the left wants you to see them.

I agree with that comment. I would also add that sometimes people are outwardly conservative in order to fit in with their peers, surrounding culture, etc. They don't want to risk being embarrassed or ostracized for thinking or acting differently from people they work with or associate with in other ways. However, in private, their lives are often drastically different from their outward image.

people .Lincoln was a Republican which was the progressive party at the time. He was even more progressive than most Republicans were comfortable with. He was not a conservative. The Democratic party at the time were the conservatives, formed from the original Federalists. Things changed in the early part of the 20th century and the parties began to flip. This change was mostly sealed in the 1960s when the Democratic party embraced a more socially liberal stance as civil rights awareness was growing in popularity whereas the Republicans threw in with Christian conservatives and adopted their ideals as part of their platform. The problem with these party divides is that they do this as a strategy to try to win votes. It becomes more about a means to keep a job and power than it is about true beliefs. I can go into any crowd of "conservatives" and pick out just as many people who don't follow conservative principles as I can go into a crowd of liberals and find people who don't even understand what liberalism is.
