I'd like to agree but history doesn't bear that out. Slavery has been with us since the dawn of recorded history right up into the present. The form might morph a bit over the millennia to make it politically correct but it's still present today. The fact is many slaves in the deep south before the civil war were treated far better than the permanent underclass we've created today. Slavery is alive and well. We've sanitized it so we don't have to feel bad about it. Now, it's "their" fault, not ours.

Actually, it's not "complete bullshit". As a student of history I can assure you there are a lot of examples. I'm certainly NOT saying there's anything good about slavery. But rewriting history is not good either. People treated their slaves much as they treated their livestock. Slaves were considered livestock. Expensive livestock to be well taken care of. That doesn't mean nice. It simply means they weren't always beating and killing them either.
Now before you jump all over this, there are literally thousands of examples of abuse. Horrific examples. Especially near the end when abolition was near. Beyond that there's the obvious moral issue of whether a person has a right to determine their own destiny.
My point is simply that the current underclass we've created is also a locked in caste system with little chance of escape. In the old days owners refused to allow their slaves an education. We have that de facto situation today in the inner cities. There are so many parallels but I'll keep this brief.

Peter, by definition a slave is one who is owned, is property, of somebody else. Whether that slave was beaten, raped, or put up in a guest house with five course meals everyday and never saw the whip is besides the point. The issue is that they were owned. Slaves were property because of their blackness, even "one drop" of black *******...That is far more evil and terrifying than the caste system, the stratified social and economic hierarchy that affects people of all color lines, that you've mentioned.

Our underclass is very much skin color based. Not solely, I agree. All one need do is look at the stats on prison population, income, education level or any number of other indicators to see that skin color discrimination is alive and well.
I would certainly agree that it is LESS skin color based now. Now it's based on educational opportunity or lack there of but it's worse than that. These days who your parents are is a greater predictor of where you'll end up than even your educational level. So even if you get a great education, if you're born to poor parents you'll probably be poor. If you're middle class now you have a 40% chance of slipping into a poorer class within 10 years. You have a 0.3% chance of moving up during that same time period. What you do with your education matters but to a lesser degree.
If you're born to upper class parents, it's almost certain that you will do very well financially no matter what educational level you attain. No matter what your character and work ethic would indicate.
