Maybe a measure of advancement of a society are night club entry practices. What my (black) husband and I have experienced a few years ago in Cape Town had shocked us. I wanted to post this for a while because maybe it's a sign of progress in South Africa.
There is a TV commercial for Virgin Mobile South Africa in which a group of young women are shown flashing a black celebrity on the red carpet. The tagline for the commercial is "We know what it is like to run out of airtime." Playing off of this line, one of them "runs out of airtime" during the flash and stands frozen with her shirt up, showing the black guy her boobs much longer than the others.

This advertisement resulted in consumer complaints which were lodged at the Advertising Standards Authority of South Africa (ASA). However, the complaints focused on the age of the girls and on the assertion that the the commercial is degrading towards women. Although both claims are ridiculous it's noteworthy that there were also claims that the commercial is inappropriate because of the fact that it displays white girls exposing themselves to a black male. These race-related claims were brushed aside. I think this is a sign of progress if you think about where South Africa was some years ago.

in Harare, admittedly over 20 years ago I found that only the Jazz Club was truly interracial.
