Exactly. Which is why I vote that we end the Housing Authority, and stop using government funding to guarantee mortgages. Why should my tax dollars go to insuring someone else's mortgage? If they can't afford to put 50% down on a house, they shouldn't buy it. Maybe less avocado toast.
Same thing with all the federal water management that makes the western half of the country habitable. Why should my tax dollars go to paying for someone to run a farm in Montana, when it has 1/4 the rainfall of Vermont? If you want to live out there, bring your own water stop having me pay to irrigate your farm.
(this is sarcasm, and is meant to point out some of the massive socialist policies the US Federal gov't supplies that millions of "self-reliant" types couldn't live without)
