For me my preference depends on the kind of ass the woman has. I think thongs are more forgiving if the girl's ass is in the range of mediocre to non-existant, whereas women who have bubbles can really fill out a pair of panties or boyshorts style panties.
On a side note: One should be careful with wearing thongs exclusively. As they are essentially butt floss and the ******* bacteria that collects on the thin back material can quite easily make it's way to the vagina area and lead to infections...
