Helen Keller once said that "happiness is not attained through self-gratifications, but through fidelity to worthy purposes." Who better to know that than a person who was blind & deaf?
Money and power are materialistic and only give the illusion of happiness. They simply stir up emotional undesirables such as greed, jealousy, envy, etc. I've known of a lot of people with wealth & power, who were some of the unhappiest people walking the earth.
Buddha says the only true happiness is by reaching "nirvana" ... by giving up all material wealth & possessions to allow one to focus on their spiritual happiness.

A complex question. But if you want to be happy you have to start with liking yourself.

IF you are talking about happiness in the moment you do what YOU want, but if your talking about happiness everyday needs to be about making others feel good. You are the one who decides that!
