I'd like to know how Gail Palmer and company managed to get Lovin Spoonful's "Hot Summer in the City," as part of the soundtrack. Hard to believe Lovin Spooful gave permission to use their song. Doesn't the movie studio have to pay for that?

In fact Gail Palmer never secured permission for any of the music used and it has created all sorts of marketing problems due to the copyright issues. The Digital Remastered version was never released on DVD because of it.

I too would have loved to have seen a lesbian scene with Jodi sensually dominanting Debby, forsing Debby's head between her sexy Black legs and making her lick and give oral sex to. Alas, it was not to be, and the toxic chemistry between them that was primarily occassioned by Jody's jealousy effectively precluded a scenario where Debby would have been a concubine to them both. They were doomed for a showdown the moment they met. Also agree that in any remake or sequel, Debby's fiancee Bill must be confronted with the fact the woman he loved and couldn't get passed first base with, evolved into a woman that couldn't get enough Black cock, at least the one attached to the man she began to fall in love with. His response to that information would be fascinating to explore. Great feedback, thanks!

The idea the fiancée "Bill" would have to grapple with a woman who tasted the "forbidden fruit, this was the 1960s" is exactly what I would build the sequel on. The fact she was not a willing participant makes it more erotic. Once she experienced it, it forever becomes the sexual high water mark that can only be achieved with black men.

Sure, i think some of the characters in this were actually really complex. Take the gang leader, Duke. After ******* Debby the night before, he brings Debby her panties the next day and has a very remorseful look on his face. Then when the Mafia guy shows up, Duke brings her to the table as they discuss the plan, as though he wants her to feel more at ease and included in the group. He also expresses concern over the plan, worried about how many Blacks will be killed. Duke is more complicated than just a ******* and a petty criminal. He's much like a young Eldridge Cleaver, a Black Revolutionary who used to ******* women for racism payback, then developed a relationship with a white woman which made him feel guilty about forcefully using white women's pussies as recepticals to be filled with Black rage. In the way he seemingly made love to Debby on night two and in the way he protected her after her escape attempt the next day, you really see a more humane Duke evolving, along the lines of Eldridge Cleaver. I thought the character development we got out of Duke from a 1 hour 8 minute movie was nothing short of brilliant by Director Gail Palmer (Part 1 of 2 in addressing your question).

(Part 2 of 2) As for Debby, I am surprised you didn't see her possibly starting to have feelings for Duke. When Duke uses Debby in his bed, while at first she tries to just lay there as though to offer passive resistance, his soft kissing of her lips ultimately pried open her lips and she embraced him and began kissing him back, then had a look on her face while they had sex which could only be described as blissful. The next morning, I thought Debby showed regret in her face, and seemed uncertain about whether she wanted to escape. Keep in mind when she went downstairs she could have quietly bolted barefoot, but instead went into the living room to get her shoes. I think her character did that to delay as she hadn't completely made up her mind what to do. Her mind likely telling her to go, her heart starting to tell her to stay. Finally, when the movie ends, you can see Debby crying when the gang drives away, and in their parting you can tell that Duke and Debby still kind of want to stay together in their body language. I thought the chemistry they demonstrated came off as very real and well acted. So if like the Foreigner song you "Want to know what Love is," you can watch the movie and look to Duke and Debby to see an example

If I was to direct a sequel I would have it start off just about as you suggested. She's crying as Duke and the gang drives away (which is how HSIC ended) and experiencing sadness at the thought of never seeing him again, and also recognizes she has feelings in her heart that she thinks could be love, as they are much more intense than her feelings for her fiancee Bill. Hence she runs after the car, and Duke sees her and orders the car to stop. He gets out then she falls to her knees and begs him to let her stay with him. Duke acquiesces after making her pledge loyalty to him and the gang and throws her into the backseat of the car. The second movie I would set towards implementing the race war plan from the first movie and placing the gang's actions within the context of the actual Detroit riots. Sub plots would involve what the gang does to cover up the deaths of their feiends, and Debby's fiancee Bill finding out about her relationship with Duke and how he reacts to it. I think that would be a great sequel, and would love thoughts on my proposal, or any other proposals other members may have. Thanks "@sheetmusic"

I have been finding out some interesting things about the movie "Hot Summer in the City" from old newspapers. One is that the cabin that served as the gang's hideout where Debby was taken captive is located in Northern Michigan, at location stated to be "Kalikasa" near Traverse City, Michigan. As you can see below, the cabin has lots of amenities! When you walk in you see a nice dinning room area with a bed for hosting guests (wanted or unwanted-See last two pics), a very spacious kitchen with two ovens where you can literally cook for a whole "gang" of your friends, and going upstairs there is a very comfortable Queen sized looking bed with art reflecting a very patriotic sentiment above the bed. Hope you enjoyed the tour, would love to visit this place if it still exists.
