... and "just something you do" ... tends to say its a phase one is going through until the interest or excitement wears off, then its off to something else.

To me, my relationships haven 't been centered around one "interest" or "goal". The quicker society can settle down to some form of normalcy and move on with life, the better we'll all be. Thinking about it ... if a white & asian, or white & hispanic form a relationship, no one says a thing about it. Not an eyebrow raises. But let a black man & a white woman form a relationship and a lot of rumors & assumptions fly. Tells me we may have an issue with bigotry in our society.
