Really?! Now my eyes will be open in the neighborhood and grocery store. If this is true, I like this signal because it is easily understood and in plain sight, but yet subtle enough.

I would. I would strike up a "friendly" conversation that dances around the upside-down pineapple. This way if it's innocent, then the conversation stays innocent, but if it's not innocent then the conversation turns into the right direction.
