By "old definitions" they can't, however, the definition of cuckold has mutated a lot since cuckolding became popular as an added excitement to relationships.
Anyway, my understanding now is that cuckold applies to anyone, including females, who are in committed relationship where both parties are monogamous to each other only. If one of the parties of the relationship cheat and have sexual relationships with other partners, the other party in the relationship would be defined a cuckold.
Personally, I would prefer keeping the definition of cuckold as it was, but most dictionary sources have modified the definition ... so I try to go with the flow, otherwise its hard to really have a conversation about cuckolding.
