I think that Ann4BBC raises a really good point, it is really down to trust for each other. For one off meets where you don't know the person, I think protection is the way to go. For regular meet ups, when you have built up a relationship and trust is has been established, you can have the conversation about taking tests and limiting other partners that would increase any risks.

This is a good risk and I applaud you for being concerned with it. I agree that caution can get thrown to the wind especially when it is just steamy and hot and both of you are ready to go right now. I'd say your safest bet is to use a condom if it is going to be a one-night stand or something along those lines. If you want something a little more committed get to know them and figure out who they are and if you trust them to answer you truthfully about that. If you don't want to use condoms on first the meet and want to minimise your chance of catching something nasty then, I don't know how it is in the US but here in the UK we can book an appointment at an official health clinic/hospital and have them text the results.

Cutting a long story short, but its pretty safe albeit not guaranteed, the closer to the time you fuck him closer to the date he received his text message health results (get him to show you the text) saying he is clean then you've pretty much nothing to worry about. That is far more safer than random bareback sex.
