Would be interesting to know what the OP did for vetting? i think there are some good practices to follow that help reduce the risk of being flaked. Would also be nice to hear from experienced couples and what they do that actually makes it work? A lot to learn from both sides.

Don't let this deter you from meeting online if that's the way you want to do things. Personally I hate being approached in public, and now with covid I don't even go out to places like grocery stores and definitely don't want random people in my space when I have to be out.
The trick to online is patience. Know what you want, don't settle for anything less but also realize it probably won't just fall into your lap. Don't rush to meet anyone. If they're truly interested today, they'll still be interested in a few weeks and if they aren't then they're not for me since I don't do one night stands.
I've never looked for male partners with my husband but we've played with several unicorns and the trick there was having me do nearly all communication. Have not entertained anyone from this site yet, although I was corresponding with someone with a potential to meet, never got farther than that.
