There aren't any mountains in Beaumont
Beaumont can also mean “beautiful hill,” which is the meaning in Beaumont, TX case. Back when Beaumont was formed, there was a large hill to the south of town. It was common for residents to have a picnic on the hill.
The hill was a salt dome capping the largest oil deposit to be discovered up to that point. Drilling it eventually caused the Lucas Oil gusher (commonly known as the “Spindletop gusher”) and resulted in pretty much all of the oil industry you see today in the US. Eventually so much oil was pulled out that it’s now a 20 foot deep depression in the ground.

Source: lived in Beaumont for 20 years. My childhood house shows up in pictures of the original oil fields.
