'The Bluest Eye’ is a novel written by Toni Morrison about the story of an African American girl named Pecola who grows up in Ohio. Pecola is scorned due to her dark skin color, because all the people around her associate beauty with “whiteness”. A growing inferiority complex fuels her desire for blue eyes. The background of the story lies in how Caucasian woman were established as model of beauty by the society, perception shared by many black people, both women and men, that respectively could not fulfill those arbitrary standards of beauty and could not have sexual access to them.

The term “Uncle Tom” comes from the title character of Harriet Beecher Stowe’s novel Uncle Tom’s Cabin.
