Dam I was devastated to hear the news about Prince (The Artist Formerly Known as "The Artist Formerly Known as Prince"/TAFKAP/Joey Coco/The Purple One). I was driving out of the office around DC and listening to the Donnie Simpson show and he was the only one in the country who had Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis on in which they went to junior high/ and high-school with Prince and were telling all kinds of stories about how he was a musical Genius even then and made them want to stop playing certain instruments because he would just show them up every time they played.
They said he was the consummate perfectionist like on the caliber of Michael Jordan's practice work ethic. He would spend 4 hrs rehearsing with the band the Time, another 4hours with the Revolution or some other group, and then still come back in the morning with the finished version of '1999' and 'Purple Rain'. And they said when he came back the next day and popped in the cassette tape it wasn't a rough demo version it was the whole song composed as you hear it on the radio. They asked him when the hell did you make those songs and he would just say 'they immitated him in the Prince voice - like the Dave Chappelle skit: "I made them last night".
WE LOST A MUSICAL GENIUS OF OUR AGE. MOZART, BEETHOVEN, move over and make room for another great musical composer to rock out with you in the after-life. But in our hearts and minds Prince will forever live on.
Remember not to mourn the loss of loved ones but CELEBRATE THEIR LIVES AND HOW THEY TOUCHED US.
I absolutely loved and was inspired by all his freaky songs and the Purple color to all of the items in my Dungeon suitcase was inspired by him as well, including to the purple lights I like to use in my room.
Below is some of my favorite jams by him although not in order of my most favorite to least favorite but at the moment this is the order that I wanted to hear and play them in Celebration and memory of his life.
Leave your comments on how Prince inspired you and some of your favorite Songs by him too as dedication and celebration of his life and work.
