The bar is steel but the links to the cuffs swivel so it is no pain. Plus the cuffs are comfortable from this maker. Stay away from metal, yuk. Very painful, can not enjoy sex with metal cuffs. Kink sells leather padded cuffs for longterm use (several days).

I actually do have a pair of metal (real) handcuffs that I've gotten quite a lot of use out of but yes in the wrong position or get them too tight and it can be painful and leave quite the bruise. I tried rope once but was not a fan. Those look really comfortable and love the black and red color combination.
