A good choice, but none the less everyone is different. There are actually women capable of taking 8 to 10 guys at the same time.
ImO three things have to be considered: First, what actions/positions are intended to happen. Second, how much time is scheduled for the event. Third, what is the expectation of the male "gang" members.
If a woman is capable of taking and chooses to take three at the same time, two for DP while having one in her mouth, for instance, the minimum number for the "gang" would logically be three. If she is almost unsatiable and up for an hour-lasting event, it had to be a higher number of participants though, because most men are not able to last that long, need some recreation time after they`ve cummed until they`re ready for the next round, plus they will be too exhausted to go on playing at some point. If the male participants expect to be an active part of the game for most of the evening instead of standing around watching and/or wanking, a crowd of say 40 guys will obviously be too big.
If the lady has no objections to the less intimate and more anonymous situation of a crowd fuck, then from that point of view there is no "too many" concerning the number of male participants. ImO it may be perfectly acceptable for a white guy to line up and wait half the duration of a GB in order to give pleasure to the lady. For a black man however i don`t see fit to be there waiting instead of getting his for the most part too.
To best meet the requirements, i have developed what i call "the magic All-Blacks GangBang (ABGB) formula". If you are "not into" reading mathematic definitions, no prob, just go on with the EXAMPLES.
The mathematical formula is as follows:

EXAMPLES:
1. A woman desires a "spitroast" situation for the most part of the gangbang.
For this, naturally, a minimum of two guys is required. For an ABGB, you have to multiply this number with 3/2, however to get the minimal number. The result is three, which is the optimal number of black men for the desired situation. (Maybe this example roughly reflects your desires,

2. A sophisticated gangbang lady who is experienced in playing with five guys at a time (three in her "holes", one in each hand o_0).
The minimal number for an ABGB would be the 5 guys necessary multiplied with 3/2, resulting in 7 and a half. However, for lack of a half person, the intermediate result has to be rounded up to the next "full" number, giving 8 as the optimal number of black men for the gangbang.

It is obviously correct that 2+1 is a threesome. And although 3+1 gives 4, and "foursome" is "technically speaking" a right term for such a situation, it was originally coined by the swingers community to mean "two couples playing" (with or without swapping partners). Taking this definition for granted, a foursome can be seen as "group sex" of the smallest group (as one less would again give a threesome).
The difference between "group sex" and a "gangbang" is not the number of participants but the dynamic. In a group sex situation every participant may but need not play with each of the others. In a gangbang it is always one participant who builds the "center of attention" for the others (the gang).
The described 3 (men) + 1 (woman) satisfies the definition of a gangbang, only with the very small (=smallest) "gang" of three (if the guys are not also playing with each other, then again it would be group sex rather than GB).
The point is that the term "foursome" is already broadly used, and in the vast majority of cases i have found it was used in the (original) sense of "two couples playing" instead of any other use, like for describing a gangbang situation, for instance. jm2ct`s.
